1. You don't use freezing, won't it hurt?
2. What is it?
3. Can it be used to take out old fillings?
Q. You don't use freezing, won't it hurt?
A. No. The only sensation you get is one of something blowing on your
tooth. Air abrasion is used for smaller fillings and as a preparation
for applying sealants, larger fillings do require freezing and drilling
in order to handle the problem.
Q. What is it?
A. Sandblasting is the closest everyday comparison that we can offer.
A very fine powder is sprayed in a controlled stream against the areas
of tooth that need cleaning or repair. Air abrasion is ideal for preparing
molar surfaces for the application of sealants. The sealant bond ends
up being stronger and there is little effect on the tooth as well.
Q. Can it be used to take out old fillings?
A. No, that has to be done with a conventional drill. The air abrasion
tool cannot be used for cavities between the teeth and it isn't used for
cavities that extend into the pulp or root of the tooth.
