luoride
is a mineral that occurs naturally in almost all foods and water supplies,
and has long been proven effective in the prevention of tooth decay in
children. Recent studies however have shown that fluoride is a major component
in the prevention of decay and tooth loss in adults.
Fluoride helps by strengthening the outside layer of the tooth, called
enamel, making the enamel more resistant to decay. Studies also show that
the application of fluoride can actually reverse early stages of cavities
by putting minerals back into weakened enamel.
As part of aging our gums tend to recede and previously covered areas
of the tooth (especially the root of the tooth where more nerves are)
become more exposed to acids formed in the mouth. These acids can wear
away the newly exposed enamel and make teeth more sensitive, especially
to cold.
Studies
1. show that an annual application of fluoride
applied on a regular basis can significantly help to prevent tooth decay
in these areas and reduce incidences of tooth sensitivity.
We suggest a fluoride application following a regular hygiene visit for
best results. Fluoride can also used to follow up tooth whitening if any
sensitivity occurs.
As always, it is a privilege to provide our patients with the latest in
proven dental health care. Ask about fluoride on your next visit.
