ooth whitening
is commonly accomplished by applying a bleaching agent (usually a 10%
solution of carbamide peroxide) to the tooth surface.. The longer the
bleaching agent can be kept in contact with the tooth, the faster it works.
A 10% solution of carbamide peroxide or up to 3% hydrogen peroxide has
been proven in testing to be safe as a bleaching agent.
The whitening toothpastes found in your grocery store or pharmacy will
contain much smaller quantities of these or similar substances. While
safe, if your goal is whitening your teeth, it would take an extremely
long time to produce any noticeable change.
Once bleaching has been done through your dentist, a whitening toothpaste
can help in keeping your teeth from staining.
Home bleaching programs involve the making of a tray to hold the bleaching
agent against your teeth. The tray is made to fit exactly to your teeth
so that the best possible contact is made between the bleaching agent
and your teeth.
The average
Home Bleaching program takes
approximately two weeks to complete, but for some patients, can run for
several weeks.
Laser Bleaching is performed in the dental office
and can be completed in two visits. For further improvement it is sometimes
followed by a home bleaching follow-up for a couple of days.
